SPAR 2008J: Capturing and Documenting Existing-Conditions Data for Design, Construction and Operations

April 17-18, Kawasaki Industry Promotion Hall, Kawasaki, Japan

SPAR 2008J, Spar Point's fourth annual forum on capturing and managing existing-conditions data for Japan, will take place April 17-18, 2008 in Kawasaki Industry Promotion Hall, Kawasaki.

Attendance at SPAR 2007J grew 40% to 261, up from 185 in 2006. Attendees included auto makers Toyota, Nissan and Hino; other major asset owners including JR (Japan Railway) and shipbuider IHI; Japan's big three engineering companies - Chiyoda, Toyo and JGC; large general contractors such as Kajima, Taisei, Takenaka and Mitsui Sumitomo; and small survey firms, several shopping for their first 3D laser scanner. The growth and diversity in both attendees and program content document the Japan market's expanding demand for 3D capture and position measurement solutions that yield demonstrable cost, schedule, safety and quality values.

Presentations and panel discussions covered technology trends in plant applications, 3D model creation from measured data, civil and building best practices, historic preservation best practices, plant best practices, even mobile survey - the focus of a new session at SPAR 2007J.

Civil engineering and transportation projects continue to account for the largest portion of 3D laser scanning applications in Japan today. Process and power industry applications are seeing accelerating adoption. Some service providers also report strong growth in scanning of automotive production facilities. Using scanning to document cultural heritage facilities is another important application in the Japan market.
